Class Rings: A Symbol of Your Achievement
Buying a class ring can be one of the best post-graduation gifts you can give yourself to commemorate all your hard work in school. While memories and photographs often fade, a class ring can be a reminder of your school days and what it took to get through them – whether to earn a certificate, a diploma or a full-fledged degree. It's something you can always carry with you.
There are many types of class rings, usually made of gold, white gold, silver or non-precious metal alloys. Class rings come in 10-karat, 14-karat or 18-karat varieties with a wide selection of shapes and cuts. The front pattern is usually rectangular or oval and can contain a school’s crest or the graduate’s birthstone. One side of the ring almost always contains the graduating year that the ring was received. The other side can list other important aspects of the graduate’s academic experience, including the names of clubs or societies to which he or she belonged.
Graduates typically wear their class rings on the ring finger of their right hand, the ring finger of the left hand being reserved for a wedding band. But some schools, in an attempt to come up with an original concept for their rings, will design them to fit on other fingers, including the pinky. In high school, it is often tradition for boyfriends and girlfriends to exchange graduation rings, either wearing them on a finger or on a chain around their neck.
Probably the most recognizable class ring in North America is the X-Ring from St. Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. This gold ring has a square front with a large black X in the center. The university introduced the X-ring in 1942 and currently gives them out on December 3rd during the feast of St. Xavier. Only students with good marks in their senior year are eligible to receive the ring.
